How Club Universidad de Chile Develop Future Talent with Video

Universidad de Chile was founded in 1927 and is one of the most successful and popular football clubs in Chile, having won the league title 18 times. In the last 10 years, the team has been crowned champion six times, including their undefeated run to the 2011 Copa Sudamericana title.

In their quest to regain the Chilean Primera División title, a new management staff has made a leap forward in the region by putting the emphasis on analysis technology to help develop a style of play.

“We’ve established our club with an all-encompassing strategy so that when different coaches come, we can offer them all the tools and show them how we work in the analysis, and that they come to foster this,” said Manuel Mayo, Manager of Women’s Formative Football at Universidad de Chile.

The main goal of formative football is to train players to progress into the first team, and technology is being used as a lever to achieve that goal.

“We’re educating our players in a certain way so they have Hudl tools present in their day-to-day lives, on their phones, and that our analyst, our coach, can send them different editions, cuts and analyses that we want them to see at the end,” said Mayo.

The players will even ask you for their own videos because they like to analyze themselves, see themselves, and notice the improvement.

We’re overjoyed because this year we have had a high number of players trained at our academy making their debut in our professional team. It’s quite a larger number than previous years.”

For Technical Secretary of Formative Football Ricardo Baier, video analysis has added a lot more to how performance is recorded in live action.

“Training sessions of the top categories are recorded every day and as it’s being recorded, each training session is edited live,” said Mayo.

“Live editing allows us to reduce the large video of the training session to certain parts that interest us and require more of our attention, so that once the session is over, the coach already has the material that interests him the most at his disposal.

We discuss the video in the club’s press room, where we mainly analyze the opposition team from a collective point of view where we can focus on our strategy to plan the match.

Afterwards, we analyze the players individually according to the criteria and profile of the player that we’re developing.”

The level of analysis is rising in Chilean football and video analysis is becoming key in terms of creating a pathway for young players.

“Chilean football is becoming increasingly more professional and it’s making the area of analysis increasingly more important,” said Baier.

“We can now see that all of the first teams have analysts and also do live analysis during the match.

When the players can see what they should improve, it helps them to have clearer goals for the future.

It’s going to be much easier for players with potential who know what they need to improve on to be able to prepare for when their opportunity comes.”
